   New picture added below ~ December 26 ~  of Read Miners Diamond Hill smoky quartz crystal cluster ( thanks, Read ! ) .  Well , another month has come and almost gone and again this page is getting heavy with pictures and slow to load. I'll probably have to start fresh with another page soon . I bought "Photoshop 4.0 " so now I can optimize picture file size  better than what I have been doing . I am looking to buy good top notch shiny smoky quartz crystals from Diamond Hill , if you have any for sale , holler at me . Read Miner of South Carolina emails in this fieldtrip report :  We had a great dig at both locations. At Diamond Hill on Monday, 12-19-05, we located a vein that was producing the plates of crystals with lustrous smoky points (the largest point is 1-1/2 inch diameter). Although we had dug many drusy plates in the morning, I didn't locate a good vein of smoky crystals until about 12:30. At that point, the three of us, Joel Padgett, Alex Butler, and me, combined efforts to remove the overburden and open up the hole. We split the findings at the end of the day. We each had one large plate of crystals (8 to 10 inches across) plus numerous smaller plates with smaller crystals. I will try to take a couple of pictures tomorrow in the sunlight and send them in case you want to use them. The smoky crystals have a thin iron oxide coating. In places where the coating has flaked off, the faces of the smoky crystals have a very high luster.On Tuesday 12-20-05, I me Art Shrader, Sue Shrader, Scott Shrader, Fred Metz, and his grandson, Matt at JXR. On lot of boulder breaking took place and more amethyst was found. In addition, a few crystals were found on the surface. I found one amethyst point that Fred says could cut about a 6 carat stone (If I ever decided to cut it). It was found on the edge of the new hole that you just started on the west side of the tool shed. Again I will attempt to take a picture of it tomorrow in the sunlight. Tia Ferrell has sent in pix that  her father - Keith Phagan's amethyst crystal finds at jxr last week .This is what Keith found in just one visit . Now the story is changed - check the farlang link lower down on this page. Keith Phagan visited JXR Friday and found a good bit of material that was washed up . Keith sent in a pictures but I could not work with the file , so I am hoping his daughter can take a pic and send it in .  Yesterdays mini-machine dig went well . Geusts included Gene Jeffers, Bill Mitcham, Dave Swearingin,Greg and Sarah Moon, Andrea Davis , Fred Boyd and Don and Marie Aldridge .  Don usually cooks on teh grill for us and this time he cooked a ham which was really good . As usuall we had a campfire which was nice.  I dug in the hole East of the green shelter and I found one big  amethyst crystal that was really nice and a deep amethyst colour. I gave this one to David S.            Jim Olson and Robert K. visited the Hogg Mine Saturday but I do not yet have pix , here is a prelim report that Jim emailed in :Hi Rodney  Hope the JXR dig went well! Robert Kyle and I had a heck of a good dig at the Hogg mine. In fact we almost called you to ask about filling up a second bucket each and paypal money to you when we got home - Instead we focused on collecting super cutting material.We each ended up with about half a bucket full of rose quartz. I would say that 95% of what I brought home is flawless facet grade. We each found a handful of tourmaline - twenty or so with nice terminations. We also found a few silver dollar sized beryl crystals. One is a strong blue green and transparent and will be cut into a cab sometime today. I will update my website with pictures of our finds within the next day or two. It could be that someone is now making spurious claims of being the "original discoverer" . I am pleased to announce a major strike of amethyst today . Digging with a backhoe on the West side of the green shelter , a big pocket of huge dark purple amethyst crystals was found . This pocket was only 2 feet deep and well within reach of pick and shovel . Anyone that had paid $25  to go out there could have dug them up since they were so close to the surface . This was witnessed by Don Brockway and Greg Moon .............and Joe Ellis who has suddenly turned pro at finding these things . Joe was the big winner and found several crystals , and 3 of these are super high quality facet grade .  I started a new hole very near this strike and folks that pay to dig are welcome to try their luck in it. I should mention that at the Lagrange clear crystal site , 3 seperate days and  3 groups of people have made BIG STRIKES of clear quartz crystals. This is a heck of a deal for $15 . Call 404-975-8005 to book a trip . Carl Rogers emailed me today with this report ( THANKS CARL ) - he sent pictures too , but it will be awhile before I have time to post them . I have all kinds of cool things to share with you as soon as I get a minute . Lately I am work 12 hour shifts at my " REAL JOB "  or digging daylight to dark . Carl's report here :Rodney - thanks for the opportunity to collect quartz xls at lagrange.  My uncle scott and I got there and dug for like 2 hours to remove the overburden from the back, bottom of the pit.  After removing the overburden we almost immediately started hitting crystals.  We got out the short fat xl pictured in one of the attached images from that hole.  After a while, it seemed like the pocket/seam area started to peter out.  So I noticed a small seam above and to the left (looking away from the creek) and began digging into that.  Almost immediately hit quartz xls.  This pocket was about 2 feet under ground and apparently had suffered from some freeze and thaw action over the eyars.  We ended up excavating a pocket about 1 foot wide, by 2 feet deep, by 2.5 feet high or so.  This pocket ended up running out of xls by the end of the day.  We were tired, but found well over 200 crystals in a day.  Many of them in the 2-3" range and some up to 6" or more.  One of the attached pictures shows a large 6" crystal we got out in 2 pieces (there was a 3rd piece, but the freeze/thaw action of mother nature ruined the bottom or it would have been 9" long).  We had a blast.  It was well worth the 15/person to attend.  Here are some pics.Carl Rogers .                        Machine dig Dec. 17th. It's cross referenced , so for instance , if you want to look for quartz , you can just flip to the quartz page and see a county by county break down of the places to go look for quartz in all it's varieties : agate , quartz crystals ( clear , amethyst , smoky ) . It has minerals and crystals from A to Z .It list a description of what has been found in the past as well as drive-up directions. When I was 18 years old I bought a copy and just wore it out form riding around looking for these places . I am on my third copy now . Special new years " Monsters of Rock " dig , New years eve  . This one may be in South Carolina , so save your dollars .  Camp on the scene or follow me to the local bed and breakfast . Spaces reserved for my regular dig folks first , then if there are any openings I will fill them on a first come first served basis .  I spoke to Carl R. who is now at Diamond Hill . He says he dug all day but did not hit the smokies . He says the pit is full of water , about 3 to 4 foot deep .  I told him that I told chet I would pump the water but chet says there is no water in the pit ( or not enough to need pumping) .Carl stated again that the general consensus  among teh crowd that was there was that the water needs pumping . He says that Rick  J . asked could he bring a pump but was told no . Here's another amethyst picture , note the wavy growth hillocks on the termination faces : Carl Rodgers called today and says his trip yesterday to the lagrange clear crystal mine was a blast ! Carl reports hitting a big pocket. He just left me a voice mail message so I do not have all the details yet .  I will be at jxr Tuesday moving dirt with my backhoe , anyone interested in coming out , there will be no extra charge other than the standard $25 entry fee.  Below is one of the pictures produced yesterday in the new  " Dixie U Technical group studio " of a aquamarine beryl crystal that I dug at the Hogg Mine back during the summer. What do you think ?  I worked all day today setting up a photoshoot for pictures to be published in a magazine . I will update as soon as I can with pictures of the set-up and the resulting photo's ( but I can't disclose anything else about the article other than it is for a magazine with high standards and heavy slick glossy paper ) . I had some help of course and a much better camera than my kodak 4 meg . Yesterday I posed the question ( see lagrange quartz crystal lower on this page ) of how did we make the crystal appear to " float in air " . David Swearingin e-mailed in with the correct answer : the specimen is photographed sitting on non-reflective glass which is set up on blocks a few feet over cloth that covers the table and then goes up a wall . This special glass proved hard to find , and cost $80 for a 2 foot x 3 foot section . The resulting pictures are top notch and I look forward to putting them up soon . I will reduce the rate to $17 per person this one time for the Dixie Mineral Council fieldtrip. I plan on taking a big machine back into the Hogg mine in early to mid-January .   Monster machine dig at jxr , december 17 , 2005 . $100 per person to get buck wild in a crystal gathering frenzy. That's what it turned into on the last dig  !  Here's what Joe Ellis found :  Joe came out to jxr about 4 times and to 2 machine digs and did not find much , just a crystal or two each time . But , he saw folks around him do well and figured that sooner or later he would get something good .   Well , last Saturday was Joe's big day . You can see what he found on the last dig ! Here's a better look at two of the nicest ones :  Marie Aldridge found a whole lot more than Joe did .  Here is a picture taken in the field by J. Don Aldridge at days end of one of Maries finds : Jim Olson went home and the next day cut one of his gemmy crystals into a cabachon that would look good set in a ring or a pendent : I want to point out that while Marie found a whole bunch , and Joe , found slightly less , there were 12 diggers and results varied . While everyone was happy , some folks did not find much . I am very excited about the next dig , but this is tempered by the thought that past results do not gaurantee future results. I suggested to Michelle Matthews a way to have  a professional background in photo's . I knew of a trick used by Jeff Scovil to make objects appear to be floating in air .  Michelle took my advise and used the method I suggested to produced this image of a Lagrange Quartz crystal . Can anyone tell me how this background was accomplished ? It involved no photoshop or editing " tricks"  and it was not cropped ,cut and pasted onto a blue background- YET IT APPEARS TO BE FLOATING IN SPACE . The answer ?  You'll just have to wait till tomorrow . Jim hit a pocket and here are the pictures of the crystals fresh out of the holeand another oneJim says his friend got the best crystal from the pocket and promises more pix later .   Just a cautionary disclaimer , that while thousands and thousands of amethyst crystals have been collected at jxr and I frequently show pictures of what other people have found , do not get the mistaken impression that crystals are easy to find . It takes skill , the right tools and hard work . If you have that , lay your money down and get to digging. On the other hand, if you ain't all that smart , have never been characterised as being "bright" , and have nothing in the back of your pick up truck other than two empty coke cans and a garden rake , and can't or not willing to swing a hammer , your chances of success at jxr are slim----- STAY AT HOME .
